NFL superstar Marshawn Lynch engaged in a short lived trademark fight with Monster Energy Co. over his “Beast Mode” nickname.
Lynch has “Beast Mode” registered as a trademark for his apparel brand, but he filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to expand the goods and services by registering the nickname for various food items, including energy drinks, candy and sports drinks. Monster claims “Unleash the Beast” as a trademark and opposed the application at the TTAB arguing a “Beast Mode” energy drink would be confusingly similar to its own “Unleash the Beast” mark. The case settled and Lynch has decided to focus on apparel and not energy drinks for the near future.
